How much do you really save on hotels if you book through a flash sale site? We’ve been running some numbers and an interesting picture is starting to emerge. If you believe the flash sale sites themselves, you may think you’re saving 60% — and sometimes as much as 80%. However, these claims should be taken with a grain of salt. Often, the rate that is used for this comparison is the hotel’s rack rate (for those occupancy dates where the savings will be greatest).
But hotels that are trying to clear their inventory for a particular period by holding a flash sale will often also discount rates for that period on their own websites and sometimes also on comparison sites like Expedia and Booking.com. Bloggers have documented cases where the flash sale rate has even been higher than the rate on normal outlets.
In general, however, flash sales do offer substantial savings. Although we’ve only just launched to the public, we’ve been collecting data on sales for the past three months. In the coming weeks, we’re going to be running a series of posts with our analysis of this data. We’ve so far found that the discount figures quoted by the sale sites are not too far off the truth, based on a comparison with the cost of making a booking at the same property and for the same dates through Expedia.
